It's not over yet! The two-year project to revamp the Bong Bridge between Duluth and Superior is mid-way through its second summer. As drivers look forward to the November completion date, this is a good time to get an update on the work as it progresses.
Year Number Two of the work on the Bong Bridge commences Monday, April 13 as the eastbound or Superior-bound lanes close to traffic until November 2015. When it's finished, the work will represent a total rebuild of the deck - something that has never occurred since the bridge first opened to traffic in 1984. It will also see the new roundabout as a fully-functioning intersection.
The two-year Bong Bridge project is wrapping up for the completion of Year One. The work will take a hiatus during the winter months and resume again in the spring of 2015.
It's been a long summer of detours and perhaps no other project has snarled traffic more in the summer of 2014 than the Bong Bridge project. As part of the two-year project, work will continue right up until the beginning of November. At that point, it will pause for the winter - only to begin again in the spring of 2015.
Drivers in the Twin Ports will get to experience a round-about traffic intersection first hand when the Bong Bridge reopens this November - as it takes a winter-hiatus during its two-year refurbishment project.
In conjunction with the current two-year project that has the Duluth-bound lanes of the Bong Bridge closed, a temporary ramp closure will begin on Tuesday, August 12 that will further complicate the situation for motorists.
