It's been years since my last Halloween costume. It was the skeleton type of costume we see everywhere..and it was very inexpensive. Even in difficult economic times like these, we still shell out big bucks on holidays.

It is scary how much we spend on Halloween.

The gruesome economy won’t stop Americans from treating themselves to $6.9 billion worth of costumes, candy and decorations in this season of the witch. The National Retail Federation said projected spending this year will rise 18 percent from last year.

Even more frightful: According to the U.S. Census, Americans consume an average of 24.7 pounds of candy each year, a big chunk of it around Halloween. Yikes.
