The NFL has a campaign then encourages kids to get out and play for 60 minutes a day. The Young Athletes Foundation encourages kids to get out every Wednesday and run!!. There are only a few weeks left to get the kids out FOR FREE and have some fun learning the competition running gives them.

Pancreatic cancer is the 4th leading cause of cancer-related death in the United States. 94% of pancreatic cancer patients will die within five years of diagnosis – only 6% will survive more than five years. 74% of patients die within the first year of diagnosis. Trish Staine, 33, of Duluth got the biggest surprise early this week. Having not gained any weight and her cycle never changed, she knew she was uncomfortable and having back pain. Having a baby, nope! She continued to training, after all, she's not pregnant, in fact, that was the last thing she thought.

When the participants come to Grandma's Marathon, it's good to come early. One of the reasons is the extra races, the spagetti dinner. Another is The Essentia Health Fitness & Health Expo, it is one of the largest of its kind in the nation.

Grandma's Marathon is getting bigger and better all the time. I met with Bob Gustafson from Grandma's Marathon to talk about the Great Lakes Marathon Series. Something new to help our marathon here and others as well as raise awareness about and for the Great Lakes.

News for those of you that are runners and don't want to do the big mileage, Grandmasmarathon.com announced that Registration for the 20th annual William A. Irvin 5K is now closed with the race reaching its field capacity. The 3.1-mile race, scheduled for Friday, June 21 at 6 p.m., accepted the first 1,900 registrants.

Fitgers 5k Race is upon us again this year. Just like Grandma's Marathon there will be some traffic delays and diversions. Obviously, you can't park or drive by Fitgers the morning of the race, but here is a listing of all the closures and traffic stops for the day.

Every so often Grandma's Marathon offers a chance to be guaranteed to be in the Garry Bjorklund Half Marathon, and they help an organization in the process. This year is the year you can help and be guaranteed.

With family members being a part of the Championships or marathon this weekend there is a great race the kids can take part in.  About 1,000 kids ages 14 and under will kick off the weekend festivities Friday, June 15 in Duluth’s Bayfront Festival Park.
