A high-visibility member of the Superior City Council is leaving the governing board.  Second-term, 8th District councilor Craig Sutherland will leave the council at the end of the month (November 30).  The resignation will leave a temporary seat to fill, with option announcements coming shortly.

According to our news partners at WDIO, Sutherland cited his health and his family as the reasoning behind the decision.  Sutherland battles Multiple sclerosis.  In a statement on his personal social media page, Sutherland shared the following message with Superior voters:

"I’ve had the privilege to represent the 8th district for nearly 5 years. I’ve been elected 3 times, and that’s one of my biggest accomplishments. There is so much that I’m proud of and you’ve helped make that possible with the support you have given me. Our council has accomplished a lot and that’s an understatement, I can say that I’m honored to be a part of that.  As we get older, our direction changes and we have to adapt. My passion for my career has me looking at “the bigger picture” and I need to follow that. My daughter is growing up too fast and I need to give her my undivided attention. I’ve been open about my MS which does play a factor in my day-to-day life.  I have decided that I need to focus on what’s best for my myself, therefore I will be resigning from the City Council on 11/30/2021."

Sutherlands current term was set to expire in 2023.

The city's website lists some of the accomplishments he's made since first winning the 8th District seat in 2017: "[Sutherland] is a huge advocate for small businesses and constituents he represents.  He was instrumental in bringing back neighborhood events to the city.  Craig believes that we need to try new things and attract people and businesses to our city."

That advocacy for small business no doubt stems from his own personal experience; the city councilor owns and operates Sutherland CBD in Superior.

As far as filling the vacancy that Sutherlands resignation leaves, the game plan will be laid out soon by the city council.  WDIO reports that "City Clerk Camila Ramos is expected to explain the options for filling Sutherland's seat at Tuesday's [November 16] city council meeting".
