Family Organizing Parade to Mark End of Daughter's Chemotherapy

A 5 year-old Northland girl is receiving her final chemotherapy treatment Friday and since the family can't throw a party to mark the event, they're organizing a parade.

On February 17, 2018, Kaya Mulek was just 3 when she was diagnosed with B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia. May 8 is when she will receive her final round of chemotherapy at Essentia Health-St. Mary’s Children’s Hospital in Duluth.

Because of the COVID-19 pandemic and related social-distancing guidelines, the celebration will have to be in the form of a parade. Her parents, Jimmy and Leighellen Mulek, are inviting everyone in the Northland to participate and show support for this amazing girl.

Between 5:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. Friday, you're invited to drive by Blackmer Park, located at 8406 Beverly Street in Duluth’s Morgan Park neighborhood. Honking is optional.

Her mom calls her "Super Kaya", so if you're looking for a sign idea, I can't think of a better one.

“(Friday) signifies that this girl, this amazing girl, who’s had to go through something so horrible that nobody should ever have to go through, that she’s done it,” Leighellen said. “She’s done with this chapter. It’s hard to put into words what it will mean. There are so many emotions.”

Kaya has been through a rough couple of years both physically and emotionally, but has handled it all with amazing strength and grace.
