If you wonder why Highway 53 has been in the news a lot lately and aren't sure of the backstory of the relocation project, this video does a good job of explaining all the details.

In 2010, United Taconite alerted the State of Minnesota that it needed to reclaim the parcel of land that they had allowed an egress on.  As part of the arrangement back in 1960, the State agreed to move the roadway when they were notified by the mining company.

Since 2010, a series of routes have been proposed.  Each of them have proponents and opponents and no one single route seems to solve everybody's issues.
