Highway 53

Highway 53, connects Wisconsin to Minnesota, it takes you up north to connect with Dylan's and John Shuster's birthplace of Chisholm and over to Virginia and International Falls. We are only concerned with the part that connects Duluth to Hermantown.

Legislators have proposed a bill that would honor Tommy Rukavina by naming the recently constructed bridge connecting Virginia and Eveleth.

1979 was a banner year for the Iron Range.  The mines were operating at their all-time capacities just ahead of the double-dip recession that the early '80's brought.  It was also the year that the Mine View In The Sky officially opened atop the waste stockpile beside Highway 53 in Virginia.

The Highway 53 relocation project on the Iron Range moved past a major hurdle yesterday:  Minnesota legislators voted to allow bonding by the Minnesota Department of Transportation.  The move was an important piece on the project;  without funding the move couldn't happen.

The biggest highway project for the State of Minnesota in decades is coming closer to its target start date.  Once complete, the relocation of Highway 53 between Eveleth and Virginia will result in the tallest bridge in the state.  It will also impact communities, businesses, and the environment.

A milling and bridge replacement job on Highway 53 near International Falls got underway this week.

Iron Range residents have reason to be happy:  The plans for a two-lane expansion on Highway 169 between Bovey and Taconite are about to move forward.

As the Minnesota Department of Transportation continues its plans for the relocation of Highway 53 between Eveleth and Virginia details are starting to be made public.  Some of those project details are rather interesting.

People who were holding out hope for a local contractor for the Highway 53 Relocation Project didn't get their wish.  Officials with the Minnesota Department of Transportation have announced the two contractors who will perform the work on what will become the biggest bridge in Minnesota when it's finished.

Even though we're in the "off season" for road construction projects, there is plenty of movement on the Highway 53 Relocation Project that is planned for 2017.  Now that the state has firmed up plans and selected an alternate route, the work on what impact this roadway will have on our environment is underway.

The E-2 Route appears to be the winner - as officials with the Minnesota Department of Transportation made their announcement of which proposed roadway they would support for the Highway 53 Relocation Project.
