It should be no surprise that a project that's already been billed as one of Minnesota's biggest highway jobs is expected to overrun its projected budget.  As the move and bridgework inches towards its November 2017 completion date, I have the feeling that we'll see the need for additional funds to cover oversights.

One of those oversights is the additional money needed to move utility lines - a cost that the City of Virginia is seeking to recoup from the State of Minnesota.

A request from State Representative Jason Metsa seeks an extra $3.4 million to cover the overrun.

Modest estimates for the total dollars that the Highway 53 Relocation Project will consume are expected to exceed $200 million.
