As thoughts turn towards spring, many start to look around their house and yard at all the stuff that's accumulated over the cold-winter months.  It's time to get rid of it - and the annual free landfill days at the Superior Municipal Landfill offer that opportunity each spring.

The 2021 dates for the spring free landfill dates are two consecutive Saturdays:  April 24 and May 1.  Event times for both dates are 8:00 AM until 2:30 PM, at the landfill which is located on Moccasin Mike Road, just a mile and half east off of Highway 53 at the southern entrance/exit to town. All residents who own property in Superior are eligible to take part in the free landfill days event.

While these two days offer an excellent opportunity to get rid of that old, unwanted stuff you've accumulated around your home, there are some restrictions and limitations as to what they'll accept at the land fill as well as limitations on what they'll accept for free. On the City of Superior's website, you'll find a very detailed explanation of what items are and aren't being accepted; click here.  However, here's a brief rundown on what isn't being accepted:

  • Household hazardous waste
  • Fluorescent bulbs
  • Recyclables
  • Electronics
  • Appliances
  • Batteries
  • Motor oil

The landfill does have options available for the proper disposal of the above-mentioned items.  Call the landfill at 715-398-7222 for all the details.

Additionally, the following items will be accepted free on those two days - whereas they normally have a fee attached to their disposal:

  • Household trash:  Regular fee is $10 minimum or $54 a ton
  • Brush:  Regular fee is $8 for pickup, $16 for a pickup and trailer load
  • Tires:  4 per residence will be accepted, 18-inch or less.  Normal fee is $5 a piece off the rim, $6 if on the rim
  • Grass clippings and leaves:  Regular fee is no charge

Questions about mattresses and box springs always come up at these free landfill days events.  The Superior landfill will be accepting them during the event, however normal fees apply:  $25 each - if completely dry and fairly clean,  $30 each if damp, wet, or heavily-soiled.

Here are some additional details needed about the free landfill days event:

  • Disposal is open only to Superior residents- must show proof of residency or ownership with a current ID or property tax statement
  • No contractors or businesses
  • All loose items must be tied or bagged
  • All loads must be covered during transport to avoid littering and getting a fine

Additional information is always available by calling the landfill:  715-398-7222 or by visiting their website; click here.
