Abby Wambach’s Goal Leads U.S. Past Nigeria To Group D Title
Abby Wambach scored on a volley from Megan Rapinoe just before halftime, and the United States defeated Nigeria, 1-0, in the Women’s World Cup at BC Place Stadium in Vancouver, Canada on Tuesday night. The victory gave the Americans first place in Group D, which means they advanced to the round of 16 in the FIFA tournament.
Wambach’s goal was her 14th in Women’s World Cup play. The 35-year-old veteran could be key as the U.S. attempts to win its first World Cup since 1999.
The Americans are scheduled to play their round of 16 match on Monday, June 22, in Edmonton.
