With some high-profile (not to mention busy and backed-up) road construction projects in the Northland, officials with the Minnesota Department of Transportation are reminding and urging drivers to utilize the Zipper Merge technique when forced to blend driving lanes.

When used correctly, the Zipper Merge decreases back-ups and allows for less delays and an overall smoother blending process.  That's why MNDOT encourages its use.

However - for some reason - it hasn't caught on in the state.  One of the theories is that its counter to the so-called "Minnesota Nice" that prevails in our area.  Many drivers feel that waiting until the last minute to make the merge is rude.

So how is the Zipper Merge supposed to work?  It's really simple;  instead of changing lanes immediately when you see a lane closed sign, wait until you get up to the actual closure and then take turns merging into the other lane.  MNDOT's website has a full tutorial on how to make the Zipper Merge work for you!
