There has been much speculation this offseason on the potential retirement of Minnesota Vikings offensive coordinator Gary Kubiak.  Thursday he made it official.

Multiple sources, including Vikings.com, are reporting that Kubiak is retiring from coaching and will not return for the 2021 season. Kubiak had retired once already, after serving as head coach for both the Houston Texans and the Denver Broncos, where he was the winning coach of Super Bowl 50.

He made the following announcement regarding his decision:

"It's been the honor of my lifetime to work for 36 seasons as an NFL player and coach. I've been on a football field for most of my life, and now I look forward to stepping away from the game and enjoying more time with my family and friends.

"I offer my sincere thanks to the owners and fans of the Minnesota Vikings, Denver Broncos, Baltimore Ravens, Houston Texans and San Francisco 49ers for giving me opportunities to be a part of this great game and for treating me and my family so well over the years.

"I'll miss the competition, the planning, game days and being part of a team. But, more than anything, I'll cherish the friendships I've made along the way with players, coaches and staff. I love the game of football and will forever be its biggest fan."

The Vikings have had great success running Kubiak's offensive schemes.  This year, Kirk Cousins threw for a career-high 35 touchdown passes and Dalvin Cook finished with 1,557 rushing yards, which was second in the NFL.

While the Vikings will now be looking for their sixth offensive coordinator is as many years, there are strong indications that Klint Kubiak, Gary's son who is currently the Vikings quarterbacks coach, is a strong candidate for the job. That would provide the Vikings some continuity on offense.

Should the Vikings choose to go with someone outside of the organization with experience, former San Diego Chargers head coach Anthony Lynn would likely be a top candidate.
