The University of Minnesota Board of Regents approved the purchase agreement for the sale of the radio station that was founded in 1957.

The agreement is to sell KUMD to WDSE-WRPT, the local PBS-affiliated TV station operated by the Duluth–Superior Area Educational Television Corporation. KUMD started as a small student-run 10-watt radio station, today it's a powerful 95,000-watt station that plays a variety of music and college programming from the UMD campus.

Patty Mester, WDSE•WRPT General Manager said in a press release, "The two stations are poised to become stronger together and to serve the community in a distinctive way that this area has not experienced before – a multi-media organization owned by the community.”

The sale still needs approval from the FCC and will enter a "90-day due diligence period" where the public is welcome to comment on the sale and the final details are worked out between the two parties before the sale becomes official.

“KUMD is a valuable community asset,” said Chancellor Lendley Black in a press release. “We were intrigued when WDSE•WRPT first expressed interest in acquiring the station to integrate it into their public media offerings. Through those discussions, I believe that they are better positioned to lead and advance public radio in Duluth."

Both parties say that there will still be some learning experiences and other opportunities for University of Minnesota students.
