A new year a new sun - at least if you're talking about its alignment.  2014 marks the mid-point of a 22-year cycle for the sun, completely flipping it's polarity back to where it was in 1997.

Now it starts over again, on the downhill of the 22-year solar cycle. Polarity flips roughly every 11 years, NASA tells us, which is what defines the solar cycle. This officially puts us at the midpoint of Solar Cycle 24.

And you thought you made changes for the New Year!
