A summer resurfacing project along Highway 169 on the Iron Range will see some advance work this week (March 23 - March 27).  Officials with the Minnesota Department of Transportation are alerting drivers that work crews will be clearing some of the trees along the route; the trees in question are within the state right of way.

MNDOT says that some of the trees along the highway have been marked, but most will not be cleared until the fall and winter of 2020-2021.  A select few ill be cleared this week for culvert and guardrail work that will eventually take place later this summer.  Adjacent property owners have been notified of the tree removal.

The remaining trees - the ones that will be cleared later this summer - will come down for safety and maintenance purposes.  The removal of the trees will open up the "clear zone - distancing the traveling public from trees in terms of collision potential.  As far as maintenance goes, the clearing addresses seasonal shading that hinders the thawing of the highway, keeping ice and snow present for a longer period of time.
