Starting tonight (New Years Eve) Minnesota State Parks spanning the entire state including Split Rock Lighthouse will kick off special candlelight events lighting up hiking and cross country trails with special lanterns.

Now through March 2 more than 30 candlelight events are being held across the state parks and trails where visitors can walk, snowshoe or cross country ski along the glow of the trails made bright and beautiful. Plus when you are done you can enjoy some hot cocoa or cider.

The event was stated more them 10 years ago as a way to attract visitors to the State Parks in the wintertime.  Erika Rivers, director of Minnesota state parks and trails said "It creates an unforgettable experience, especially beneath the light from a starry sky and full moon,”

While the events are free, visitors need a state park pass ($7 a day or $35 a year; go to mndnr.gov/reservations to purchase online) to get in. Snowshoes and cross-country skis can be rented or checked out at some parks.

Wisconsin also offers a similar program with 35 candlelight programs across the state parks. For more information on this great winter activity Click Here.
