A busy intersection is going to be closed in order to allow construction of a roundabout.  The intersection of Midway Road and Maple Grove Road will close to traffic starting Saturday, July 7.  The closure on Midway joins the stoppage of traffic on Maple Grove which has been in effect since mid-June.

Drivers who need to navigate through the intersection will be direct to use the posted detour.  All northbound traffic will be detoured to Highway 2, Canosia Road, and Highway 194.  Meanwhile, southbound traffic will be detoured to Highway 53, LaVaque Road, and Highway 2. Large trucks will be detoured over to Highway 33 and 2.

The roundabout for the intersection is on schedule and is expected to be open to traffic by August 31.  Construction costs are in the $2.1 million range, funded by State Aid funding.  Northland Contractors is the general contractor.

With more than 9,000 vehicles traveling through the intersection on a daily basis, Maple Grove-Midway Road is known for having a higher-than-usual number of accidents and lengthy backups.  A research study conducted by Saint Louis County concluded that a single lane roundabout at the intersection would be the best way to improve safety and reduce congestion.
