The long summer road project to rebuild one of Duluth's most-used routes will take a turn towards the next phase, resulting in a significant closure this weekend.  Officials with the Minnesota Department of Transportation are alerting drivers in advance of their plans to make sure everyone is ready.

According to MNDOT, the majority of Mesaba Avenue, Central Entrance, 6th Avenue and Rice Lake Road will close to through traffic starting 7:00 PM on Friday, August 17 - lasting through 5:00 AM on Monday, August 20.  The closure will allow work crews to make progress on some of the details of the project.

Motorists are strongly urged to use alternate routes this weekend. The Minnesota Department of Transportation has listed a detour route, which is available by clicking here.

In addition - and in advance - a ramp from southbound I-35 to eastbound Highway 2 will close, starting Thursday, August 16.  This closure will last a while longer - until Thursday, August 30.  The closure will allow work crews to paint the portion of the ramp that is over water.  To expedite the process, the work crews will work seven days per week during the closure until the work is done.
