Will March 2022 Come In Like A Lion Or A Lamb In Duluth?
March is here which can mean two things: another month of grueling winter for the Twin Ports or the light at the end of the tunnel when we start to see signs of spring.
There are so many things to look forward to around this time of year as winter turns to spring, even if it does so slowly. After a long and cold winter, everyone just becomes happier when the sun shines more and it isn't so cold.
February was definitely a cold one and it ended on a snowy foot. A huge snowstorm dumped up to two feet of snow across the Northland, leaving the area with poor visibility, blowing snow and a ton of snow to clean up.
The Old Farmer's Almanac did predict we would see snow to close out the month and we did. It was also a nice upgrade to the previous February, where the Duluth area saw record-breaking cold for most of the month.
What does the month of March hold in the Twin Ports?
So now that March is here, what happens now? I turned to the Old Farmer's Almanac to find out, although you have to take their predictions with a grain of salt. I hope their forecast is right because it looks pretty good!
According to the Old Farmer's Almanac, the beginning of the month will be warm (by March standards) with a few thunderstorms. Beginning on the ninth of the month, storms will turn to snow showers and temperatures shift cold.
Mid-March will bring mild conditions, as we see warm enough temperatures to turn snow to rain. The end of the month will bring more winter-like conditions, with snow and cold temperatures.
Overall, what do our temperatures look like throughout the month?
While nobody is going to be sunbathing anytime soon, our temperatures may feel tropical at times. The Old Farmer's Almanac says we will see an average temperature of thirty-four degrees, which is well above our average for the month. I have no complaints about that!
Will March come in like a lion or a lamb, as the old saying goes?
This is always a phrase used near the end of February and into the start of the month. Because March can be so unpredictable, people use the phrase to describe what type of weather we see as we make the transition from February into March. It looks like while it may come in like a lamb, more lion-like weather is on the way.
The National Weather Service of Duluth is forecasting a winter storm this weekend (March 4th). They shared some details of the storm on their Twitter account Monday (February 28th).
The National Weather Service of the Twin Cities also weighed in on the lion or lamb of it all, sharing that March would indeed be coming in like a lion thanks to this storm system. They shared a few details on their Facebook page Tuesday (March 1st).
So while things may seem calm heading into the first few days of March, things could take a big turn by the first weekend of the month. Nothing surprises us here in the Northland when it comes to the weather!
