Drivers who travel Highway 61 along the North Shore will want to know about a road construction project that begins on Monday, May 21 - bringing single lane closures, temporary signals, and flagging operations.  According to the Minnesota Department of Transportation, the initial impact will be near Beaver Bay.

Work crews with the Minnesota Department of Transportation will spend the summer replacing a culvert and resurfacing Highway 61's roadway. While the initial impact will occur at Beaver Bay, the work will eventually evolve to include areas near the Lafayette Bluff Tunnel, Gooseberry, Silver Bay, and Illgen City through mid-June.

Drivers are cautioned to expect stops and delays while in the road construction project.  Single lane closures in both directions will be in place and at times a flagger will be utilized to direct traffic through the area.

When finished, the Highway 61 project will bring many improvements to the driving experience - including a smoother ride quality.  In addition, workers will make improvements to drainage and runoff.
