A summer-long resurfacing project is expected to have traffic impacts for drivers.  Officials with the Minnesota Department of Transportation are sharing their planning details about the work expected to happen on Highway 23 in the Gary-New Duluth neighborhood.

According to the details available on the project page on the MNDOT website, the resurfacing project will take place on the 1.4 mile stretch of Highway 23 between Highway 139 in Gary New Duluth to Perch Lake.

During the project, drivers should expect lane closures and a temporary signal within the work zone.

Here's what MNDOT work crews will accomplish during the project:

  • Pavement resurfacing
  • Culvert repair
  • Guardrail replacement
  • ADA improvements

The general goal is to "improve ride and extended useful life of pavement" within the area.

MNDOT's expected timeline has the work starting in June, with work continuing throughout the summer.

Total cost for the work is estimated to be $2.5 million. The general expectation is that the capital outlay would be recouped over the lifetime of the road surface.

Ahead of the road construction project, MNDOT will be hosting a public informational meeting on Wednesday, April 26. The meeting will happen at the Gary New Duluth Rec Center:  801 101st Avenue West; the event will start at 8:00 PM. Staffers from both the Minnesota Department of Transportation and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources will be on hand to present information about the resurfacing project as well as the Perch Lake Restoration Project that will happen in late summer and fall of this year.

Complete information about the project can be found on the MNDOT website.
