Duluth Fire Department Asks Residents to Stop Bringing Sharps to Fire Stations
The Duluth Fire Department posted a reminder to Northland residents Monday regarding the disposal of sharps, which is the medical term for devices with sharp points or edges that can puncture or cut skin. Needles would be a very common example.
Apparently, members of the community have been dropping off sharps at their local fire department stations, which is something the Duluth Fire Department does not want to happen any longer. I would think they would have a few concerns with this practice, health concerns are the first to come to mind.
They made this request on their official Facebook page, while also reminding residents that there is a very specific place downtown Duluth where sharps can be disposed of:
The DFD would like to inform the community that if you have sharps to dispose of, please do not bring them to your local station.
Sharps can be disposed of anytime in the 24-hour, outdoor drobox in front of the RAAN office at 31 W 1st St.
It is a big white drop box, near the sidewalk, and anyone can dispose of used needles – it functions like a big blue metal postal box.

After making that original post, there were Facebook comments insinuating the fire department was asking residents to pick up discarded needles they might find laying around in the area. That, of course, is a very bad and unhealthy idea, so the Duluth Fire Department later updated their original post:
The DFD is NOT asking citizens to pick up needles, we are simply informing those that have been dropping off sharps at stations to bring them to the sharps collection container located at 31 W 1st St. Thank you!
They ask that Duluth residents to share their Facebook message in an effort to spread the word throughout the community.
