Bruno Mars did not receive one penny for his Super Bowl performance. He is paid in publicity. That means, Paul McCartney, Beyonce, KISS, Prince, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers all performed without getting paid. Here's how it works:

First of all, the NFL doesn't tell them which of their songs they can and can't do, so they can put together their strongest material. The NFL pays for all commercials and any other ads, like stand ups for grocery stores, or other promotional material. The runs into the millions of dollars. The NFL will promote the heck out of the show.

Another thing to remember is you are playing on the biggest stage in the world. You are being seen by over hundreds of millions of people. The most important thing, the NFL pays for any stage and sound support you need. If you want some dancers, the NFL pays for hotel, travel, and staging. That could be costly too.

You? You will not be paid. When they asked Bruno Mars and told him they do not pay anyone, he said, the exposure was well worth it. As did all the other artists that play the coveted gig.
