Can You Predict The First Ship Of 2019?
The First Ship Contest from Visit Duluth and the Duluth Seaway Port Authority gives ship enthusiasts a chance to win a Duluth Getaway.
Starting today you can submit your guess, exact date and time, of when the season’s first ocean-going vessel, or “saltie,” passes under the Aerial Lift Bridge. The contest closes at midnight on March 24.
According to a press release from Visit Duluth, the Federal Weser was the first “saltie” to reach Duluth in 2018, arriving at 9:46 p.m. on April 12. The winner of last year’s contest was off by just under 20 minutes. The earliest arrival of a “saltie” on record was the Federal Hunter on March 30, 2013, and the ice-delayed arrival of the Diana on May 7, 2014, went into the history books as the latest.
The first and second place winners of the 2019 First Ship Contest each win a Duluth getaway, including lodging accommodations, gift cards to local restaurants, and passes to several attractions.
According to a press release from Visit Duluth, last year, 2,600 people submitted their guesses for the First Ship Contest. Only one contest entry allowed per person.
