With the Washington Capitals winning the Stanley Cup for the first time in franchise history last night, four Minnesota boys get to now put their name on Lord Stanley forever.

The following four Capital's players played their high school hockey in Minnesota:

  • Matt Niskanen, Virginia (University of Minnesota-Duluth)
  • T.J. Oshie, Warroad (University of North Dakota)
  • Shane Gersich, Holy Family Catholic (University of North Dakota)
  • Travis Boyd, Hopkins (University of Minnesota)

The State of Hockey represented well. Niskanen and Oshie were huge for the Caps all throughout the playoffs. Gersich saw action in two playoff games and Boyd saw action in one.

It's funny to see that all four players stayed quite close when making the jump to college hockey. A Bulldog, two Fighting Sioux Hawks and a Gopher.

Now the big question is going to be where are these four going to go with their days with the cup? I think it's safe to say that T.J. Oshie will be making a stop in Warroad. Beyond that it's tough to say. Could we potentially see the Stanley Cup make it to Duluth this summer with Matt Niskanen?
