The Feast of St Nicholas occurs every year on December 6.

For many people - Catholics especially, this feast date represents the origins of many of the customs and traditions that the secular world commonly groups with Christmas.

Many Catholic families celebrate the Feast by having the children in their house leave out their shoes or a stocking by a doorway on the night before to collect the gifts that Saint Nicholas leaves for them - which are often coins or sugary treats.
