Shocking Blue was formed in 1967, but really didn't get into gear until singer Mariska Veres, whose  solid singing brought the band  a huge international smash with “Venus” in 1970. Despite the fact the band has produced eight good rock  albums, they were basically marketed as a pop singles unit. When none of the group’s releases approached the success of “Venus,” Veres left the band to pursue a solo career. She died of cancer in 2006 at the age of 59.
