Although remembered today primarily for one or two songs, Stealers Wheel desired to become Britain's answer to Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young. Unfortunately they never came close as they were never able to keep the same members.  Gerry Rafferty, Joe Egan, and Roger Brown became came the core of the group. Their harmony is actually what kept the band around at all. As new members came and went, the band was required to hire studio musicians, even when they went on tour. This, coupled with their inability to produce top hits, lead in infighting and the demise of the group.
