Jim Peterik and Frankie Sullivan wrote this for their band Survivor. Survivor recorded the song for their first albumbut the producer decided it wasn't right for the record. John Kalodner, who signed .38 Special and Survivor, took the rough mix and gave it to.38 Special's manager, Mark Spector. They recorded it, loved it, and made the song into their first hit. Says Peterik, "We were sitting there thinking, 'It would have been nice if it was us,' But I didn't personally begrudge .38 Special because the money was landing in my pocket."
