Crews with the City of Duluth have been making significant progress on the utility work happening on Michigan Street.  Work has been progressing since April on electrical, gas, sewer, water and steam lines - requiring disruption of the roadway.  The first part of the work is finished and as the project takes a couple of weeks off, Michigan Street will be re-opened to traffic.

Work is scheduled to resume on July 18.  At that time, three additional phases of work will commence.

  • Phase 3 starts July 18.  This work will impact the area from the Medical Arts Building to Republic Bank;  the roadway between these buildings will be closed to traffic for about 6-7 weeks.  Additionally, the 4th Street West intersection will be closed for the first 4-5 weeks but traffic will have access to Republic Bank and the Ordean Building via 5th Avenue West.
  • Phase 4 will begin in September.  This work will impact access from Republic Bank to the 5th Avenue West corner for 4-5 weeks.  Entry to the 4th Avenue West parking ramp will only be accessible from 4th Avenue West;  the ramp will be configured to allow temporary exiting at the 4th Avenue West and Michigan Street intersection.  The usual exit out of the ramp onto Michigan Street will be closed for the entire duration of this phase.
  • Phase 5 will occur during late August and early September.  As a follow up to Minnesota Power's electrical work last summer, concrete repairs along Michigan will happen.
