Cathy Kates

I'm a Northland girl, born in Cloquet, raised in Wrenshall, and currently living in Duluth. I consider myself lucky to have been able to share my mornings laughing with you for the past 20 years. It's like audio Facebook. I make new friends, but I keep up with old friends too. I set three alarms to get up at 3:10am to do my job, then nap in the afternoon! I am a self-proclaimed multi-tasker (FYI: I am writing my bio, eating breakfast, holding three texting conversations and contemplating what I'll be having for lunch and what to make for dinner ALL right this second). I can't sit still. I even wear a head lamp at campfires so I can cross stitch at the same time. I love puppies, (especially my Schnauzer, Bauer), hot buttered movie theater popcorn, soup, the smell of a lake (especially if I’m fishing in it) and warm fuzzy blankets. I’m a lover, not a fighter, and yes it’s true, I get my hair cut on a weekly basis. I appreciate that you wake up with the B105 Breakfast Club, read and share my blogs and most of all, your friendship through the years! Peace, love and hugs!

Does Anyone Still Have Foosball, Pool Tables Or Air Hockey In Their Homes Anymore

Luckily my friends had rec rooms, rumpus rooms and basements filled with fun games, because all I had was a phonograph.  That was it, a phonograph.  Through my friends I learned how to play pool, air hockey and foosball.  We recently acquired a foosball table through a Family Pathways Thrift Store in St. Croix Falls, WI and childhood memories came flooding back.

Remember When You Had To Share A Bathroom Cup? Ewwwww

Years ago it was not uncommon to see a toothbrush holder in the bathroom with the family's toothbrush standing at attention around one cup that everyone would use when they wanted a drink of water or to rinse their mouth when brushing their teeth.  Plain and simple, that. is. gross.  Did your family do that, do they still?

4 Northland Beverages That Parallel The Martini Made With San Francisco Fog

The new crazy trend is a $43 martini made with what they call genuine San Francisco fog.  I expected it to be just a bottle of air, but what really happens is that the vodka is harvested water from the fog in San Francisco.  That got me thinking of all the opportunities we have right here in our own backyard.

Annual Dress Drive Offers Prom And Formal Dresses At Valley Youth Center [VIDEO]

They call her the "dress fairy".  I call her the woman with utmost compassion and true love for helping others.  Her name is Mary and thanks to her dedication and giving up half her basement for storage, high school aged girls currently enrolled in a school of the Northland that might not have a dress for the high school dance or prom can now show up with sparkling confidence.

The Bayfield Apple Fest is coming up the weekend of October 7, 8 and 9, time to get out all your favorite apple recipes.  May I suggest one to add to your cache?  Taste of Home adds the unusual taste of almond brickle and English toffee to make a dip that won't stay in the bowl for long.

The William A Irvin Haunted Ship Is Looking For 2016 Actors And Actresses

It's anticipated by many every year, the William A. Irvin Haunted Ship.  My friend Dave is the actor coordinator (involved for last 16 years and has coordinated the actors for the last 11 and he's just an all around great guy!).  They are looking for volunteers to act (aka: scare), improve (aka: scare) and SCARE the thrill seekers and there's an incentive plan!  Do you have what it takes to be ghoulish?

UDAC’s Walk A Mile In Our Shoes To Benefit STEPS Surpasses Last Year’s Total [VIDEO]

Darren Danielson of WDIO and I were blessed to be involved as co-chairs in the 9th Annual UDAC fundraiser "walk a mile in our shoes" event last Saturday.  It was a glorious morning for an event that is so well received in the community.  It was held at Malosky Stadium on the UMD Campus and several of the Bulldog's athletic teams and the UMD Marching Band were on hand to lend their support.

Are You Frugal? I Sew Monkeys.

I'm not totally frugal about everything, but for some reason I felt the need to start saving the dog toy monkeys that Bauer the Schnauzer has chewed holes in.  After 8 monkeys, a hedge hog and the worm started taking up too much space in the craft room, I decided it was time to open the sewing kit and repair.  Oh, one thing, I can't sew.
