A major road project on one of the busiest stretches in the Twin Ports will kick off this summer.  In advance of the road work planned for U.S. Highway 2 and 53 in Superior, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation will hold a teleconference to discuss the resurfacing work, traffic impacts, and general questions and comments.  The work planned for this summer will occur between 29th Avenue East and 53rd Avenue East.

One of the major traffic impacts that this road project will bring about is the reduction of U.S. Highway 2 and 53 from two lanes in each direction down to one lane in each direction for the duration of the project.  Officials with WISDOT anticipate traffic backups and are trying to open up the lines of communications as early as possible with the general public so that there are no surprises along the way (or when the lane reductions begin).

According to details released by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, the scope of the work will include:

"[R]epairs to the concrete pavement, curb and gutter, followed by a grind and asphalt overlay of the pavement surface. Storm sewer work will include repairs of existing inlets and manholes. Curb ramps will be installed, replaced or upgraded to the extent feasible to comply with the Americans With Disabilities Act."

Work is expected to get underway this spring and conclude at some point in the fall. Work will be staged throughout the project to keep the roadway open to traffic.

During the call, officials with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation will discuss the construction schedule, detours, access, local traffic through construction, and construction staging.  There will be opportunities to ask questions.  Representatives from the City of Superior will also be available to provide information.
