Sports enthusiasts - good news:  The City of Duluth is planning for the future of athletic facilities in the western part of our city. To get a sneak-peak, attend the open house scheduled for Tuesday, March 3 at the Wheeler Field House starting at 6PM.

An eight-month process started in December 2014 and has August 2015 as the target date.  When it's finished, the city will have a mini-master plan ready for the West Duluth Sports Corridor which includes Wheeler Athletic Complex, Wade Stadium Complex, and Heritage Sports Center.

The plan itself will identify improvements to establish a premier athletic destination for northeast Minnesota.  When completed, the mini-master plan will:

  • Recommend improvements to Wheeler Athletic Complex and Field House.
  • Address improvements to the Wade Stadium Complex. The mini-master plan will address the baseball and softball fields south of the stadium, parking, and circulation. Stadium improvements are being addressed in a separate study.
  • Identify connectivity, signage, and identity improvements needed to create a cohesive corridor connecting Wheeler Athletic Complex, Wade Stadium Complex, and the Heritage Sports Center.
  • Inform the preferred alignment for the Cross City Trail between the Heritage Sports Center and Wheeler Athletic Complex.

The open house on March 3 will not have a set agenda and members of the public are invited to drop in any time during its duration to learn about the project and provide feedback to the planning team.

In addition to the public opportunity at the Wheeler Field House, an online survey is also available for comment.  Click here to leave your input.
