How does the Aerial Lift Bridge look so good for visitors and locals? It's cleaned, and the annual cleaning will take place Monday, May 13th.

During the washing, no one will be allowed on the bridge. Neither vehicles nor pedestrians will be allowed to cross the bridge. Traffic will be stopped in 10-15 minute increments.

The traffic will be controlled by the stoplights on the bridge. Cleaning will start at 9 am and is expected to be completed by noon.

The original bridge was constructed in 1905 as an aerial lift, this unusual elevator bridge is 386 feet long and spans the canal entrance to Duluth Harbor.

According To Inspirock,

The Aerial Lift Bridge is one of only two vertical-lift bridges in the world. Built in 1905, the bridge was upgraded between 1929 and 1930 to lift vertically. The entire bridge rises, just like an elevator, to allow boats to pass underneath. The United States Army Corps of Engineers manages a maritime museum that will help you understand the complex mechanism.
