Time Runs Out For MN + WI Residents To Get Free COVID Tests

You're (almost) out of time and out of luck. The federally-funded program that doled out free COVID-19 tests to Americans across the country ends on September 2. That's the date that the program officially runs out of money from the taxpayers.

When the program was first established in January 2022, every household in the country (including those in Minnesota and Wisconsin) were allowed to order a batch of four kits. There was no charge for the actual COVID-19 tests and postage was covered by the taxpayers as well.

That number for kits was increased in May 2022; at that point, every household in the country was allowed to order up to 16 rapid antigen tests.

With a lack of continued funding for the program, it's being suspended - at least for now. If you're interested in getting those free COVID-19 test kits - and you haven't hit the maximum number per household yet - you can still order them, at least through September 2. Either visit covidtests.gov or call 1-800-232-0233. And while the federal government estimates that they will still have enough COVID-19 test kits to go around after that deadline, the last call comes with an obvious message of "while supplies last".

So what happens if you miss the deadline and still need a COVID-19 testing kits? By this point of the pandemic, they are readily available at pharmacys, drug stores, and a variety of big box stores. "Insurance companies are required to reimburse you up to $12.00 per individual test, for up to eight tests per month". That means that "a family of four can get 32 tests per month for free" - albeit not through the federal government.

What Do I Do If I Lose My COVID-19 Vaccination Card?

When you get your COVID-19 vaccine, you're handed a card that details the date, manufacturer variety, and location of your dose. If you're getting one of the two-dose vaccines (Pfizer or Moderna), you'll need that card to coordinate your second and final dose. But even with the one-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine and even after getting the second shot, you'll need to keep that card in a safe place.

While nationwide vaccine mandates aren't a thing at the present time, there are a variety of times you might need that card even after completing the vaccine process. Many schools (primary, secondary, and higher education) are requiring the COVID-19 vaccine similar to other vaccinations. Additionally, some entertainment venues and mass transportation are requiring either proof of a negative COVID test or the vaccine card.

So what happens if you lose it? Relax. There are ways of obtaining a replacement - and they differ slightly whether you've lost it before getting both doses or after.
