The multi-year Superior Street project in downtown Duluth embarked upon a new chapter.  Officials with the City of Duluth and the Minnesota Department of Transportation have alerted the general public that the 3rd Avenue West intersection at Superior Street has closed as of Monday, August 10; this closure will allow for the final leg of the project to proceed during the remaining summer months.

Up to this time, the intersection at 3rd Avenue West has been open to "through" traffic (i.e. drivers wishing to cross Superior Street between First Street and Michigan Street; Northland Constructors (the contractor of record for the project) has also been using this street to access the western "end" of the blocked-off Superior Street project area.  This closure of the intersection will allow the project to migrate towards this western end - with the eventual completion on the seasonal horizon.

The intersection closure will also bring changes to Michigan Street.  According to information released by the City of Duluth: "Michigan Street will temporarily be a two-way street between 3rd and 4th Avenue West during this closure. The intersection will remain closed until the Superior Street Phase III project is complete".
