Superior School Board Debates Access To Student Information
How much information about underage students is available - or obtainable - to the general public. In other words if you called the school today to inquire about a student, what sort of things do you have access to? That's the question that the Superior School District took up at their most-recent meeting.
The current policy allows for the release of more information than you might think. Here's a rundown of what is made public - according to news sources:
- Name
- Date of birth
- Address
- Telephone number
- Photograph
- School sports and extra-curricular activity data
- Dates of attendance
- Degrees/diplomas received
- Height & weight (if student is involved in sports)
Surprising? Many are concerned that some of the more-private details about an enrolled student (i.e. address and phone number) could leave them vulnerable to someone with malicious intent.
Superior School Board officials point out the fact that parents can opt-out to make this data private. In theory, the information is used in a variety of ways that don't involve the general public - like sports directories and activity programs.
At the September 9 meeting, Superior School Board officials moved to remove both the address and phone number from the information that is generally available about students. The motion will move forward for final approval at the October 7 meeting.
