Superior Council Approves Transition To Hybrid Fleet Vehicles

An affirmative vote by the Superior City Council at their meeting on February 15 helps to usher in a "green era" for the city.

The vote approved the purchase of three hybrid vehicles to be used as part of the fleet of vehicles that the Superior Public Works Department maintains for operations. According to an article in the Superior Telegram [paywall], the purchases will help "launch the city's efforts to convert its fleet to cleaner energy vehicles".

A conversion of the city's fleet vehicles to something "cleaner" isn't a new development.  The conversation started last year - when Superior Mayor Jim Paine, in his State of the City address - announced his support towards making the move.

Following the speech, much discussion has been had at the city - from the top down - as everyone debated about the best way of making that happen.  Early on. hybrid vehicles became the focus as Public Works and City Councilors both agreed that would be the most prudent approach. Fully-electric vehicles would require a large infrastructure investment to make them feasible; that's something that the city doesn't have at this time and doesn't have the funding to make happen anytime soon.

Part of the transition was accelerated by the current age of the city's fleet vehicles.  "Twelve of the city's passenger vehicles (are) older than 12 years (old).....(so) it's something for the council to consider when those vehicles are replace".
