St. Louis County Honors Rep. Joe Begich With Highway Name

Following a busy summer of resurfacing work on County State Aid Highway 101 on the Iron Range, officials with St. Louis County have decided to honor one of the areas long-term lawmakers with an honorary highway name.  The eight-mile stretch of 101 that runs between east of Eveleth to County Road 62 west of Mountain Iron will now be known as Representative Joe Begich Highway.

Begich has served the residents of northern Minnesota and the Iron Range area for many years.  From 1965 to 1974 he was the mayor of Eveleth;  Begich was then elected into the state legislature in 1975, serving until 1992. His community service also includes a four year stretch in  Korea with the U.S. Army Infantry.
