Once In A Blue Moon Happens This Saturday; May 21 Represents Seasonal Occurrence
Perhaps everyone has heard the phrase "once in a Blue Moon". In the popular lexicon, the phrase has come to mean something that doesn't happen often. Most people also know what a Blue Moon is astrologically speaking: the second full moon in a calendar month. This Saturday however, the Blue Moon that occurs is the only full moon we'll see in May. So why is May 21, 2016 considered a Blue Moon?
The answer comes from the second definition of the phenomenon. While it's true that a Blue Moon occurs when there is a second full moon in a month it can also occur when there are four full moons in a season. When this happens, the third full moon is called a Blue Moon - even if it's the only occurrence in the calendar month.
