No Spoilers Review: Here’s What Makes ‘The Batman’ So Good

The Batman opened this last weekend with a reported $134 million in box office sales in the United States alone.  This was a film that I could not wait for as I haven't felt many of the DC Comic Movies were really that good as of late, except for Zach Snyder's Justice League.

While I was hoping for a standalone Ben Affleck Batman film which would probably be great, 'The Batman' starring Robert Pattinson, was incredible.  I haven't wanted to see a comic booked based film more than once in theaters since Avengers: Endgame, or to put it in Batman terms, since The Dark Knight.

Batman(1989) and The Dark Knight were so far my two favorites featuring the non-superpowered yet rich super hero character.  The Batman is now in that list making it tough for me to pick which is best of those three.  Here's why I thoroughly enjoyed the latest film:

'The Batman' is dark

As it should be.  We all know about Bruce Wayne's haunting childhood trauma, and while other films focused on that, you could feel it through all of this one.  It was of course included in the dialogue, but you could also see it in Pattinson's face, how he carried himself, and it really was the tone of the whole film.  The movie dripped of darkness, desperation, dreadfulness, corruption, and gave more feelings of that throughout than Batman Begins and The Dark Knight combined.  It's been two hours since I saw it, and I still can feel the dark emotions from it in my soul.

That darkness tone I mentioned above, you can't have that without music.  Well, you can, but I think the music in The Batman was what really put that mood over the top.  Michael Giacchino composed the film's score and it worked well, but the icing on the musical cake was Nirvana.  A re-arrangement of Nirvana's 'Something in the Way', was peppered throughout the movie, and was never out of place for the imagery and emotional tone of the story.  It will probably be stuck in my head for a week, and I'm okay with that.

Chicks dig the car

Not just the ladies, who doesn't appreciate a badass Batmobile?  The Batman takes place only a couple of years into Bruce Wayne's becoming Batman, so he's still figuring things out.  The car is raw, tough, fast, and sounds incredible.  It's essentially a muscle car on hard drugs.  The 1989 Batmobile will always be my favorite, and it's also hard to deny The Tumbler from the Nolan films as it's basically a tank with giant wheels.  If you don't like the car in the new film, you're probably not very much fun to be around.

No bad acting in 'The Batman'

At first hearing about this film, I was a little hesitant because of Pattinson playing the lead.  I still have thoughts of him as the sparkle in the sun vampire from the Twilight movies.  After chatting with several friends over the last few months that are also Batman enthusiasts, we all came to the same conclusion.  Pattinson is great at playing a brooding character, so why wouldn't he be a good Batman?  We were right, they cast the World's Greatest Detective appropriately.  Not just him though, the whole cast did a great job and nothing felt forced.  While not quite show stealing like Heath Ledger portraying The Joker in The Dark Knight, Paul Dano's version of The Riddler in The Batman is done really well too.

You know, comedy.  I did have maybe one almost chuckle moment while watching the film, but mostly just some grins and smirks.  There was nothing cheesy or campy about the dialogue, or unnecessary comedy attempts added in.  Sure, in dark feeling films you can have a little joke here and there, but past Batman movies pushed it too much.

'The Batman' deserves a sequel

Hell, make three more of them as far as I'm concerned if they can at least match what they did here.  They have many a more villains to pick from, with potential teases of others already.  Unlike Aquaman(snore), I left this wanting more, so I hope they continue with the storyline and same casting.

I'll be seeing 'The Batman' again in theaters at least once and maybe even twice.  I honestly can't think of anything I didn't like, and I'm pretty judgy on all things Batman.  If you saw it, what did you think?
