Minntac Receives Permits Needed For Expansion; Plans Will Extend Life Of Mine By Almost 20 Years
Good news for U.S. Steel and the Iron Range: The US Army Corps of Engineers has approved the final permits the mine needs for their proposed expansion plans.
Officials with Minntac say that the 483 acre expansion will extend the life of the facility by more than 16 years and add approximately 100 jobs to the workforce. Minntac currently employes 1,400 people at the plan that's located in Mountain Iron, Minnesota.
Minntac is the worlds largest taconite facility and has undergone two prior expansions since opening in October 1967.
