The Minnesota Golden Gophers football team will cap off a terrific season by playing in a top shelf bowl game against a top shelf opponent on New Years Day.

The official word came Sunday that the No.18-ranked Gophers (10-2) will battle the No. 11-ranked Auburn Tigers (9-3) in the Outback Bowl in Tampa, Florida.

Having recently upset No. 5-ranked Alabama 48-45, ACC powerhouse Auburn will provide an extremely tough test for the Gophers.

According to GopherSports.com:

The Outback Bowl will be the 21st bowl game all-time for Minnesota, but it will mark the first time that the Gophers have played in the Florida-based Bowl. It will also be the second straight bowl game for the Gophers under head coach P.J. Fleck, as Minnesota played in the Quick Lane Bowl in Detroit last season and beat Georgia Tech 34-10. The 24-point win was Minnesota's largest bowl margin of victory in school history.

Kickoff is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 1 from Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida.
