Work on Michigan Street in downtown Duluth continues to roll along - with crews making great progress on the utility upgrades.  Here's what's new.

  • Michigan Street Closure - 5th west to 6th west.  This block-long closure will be in effect until about October 3 as workers replace the temporary bituminous street surface that still remains from a project last summer.  The road surface will be replaced with concrete.  While the work is being performed, a detour will be in effect that takes traffic from this block up 6th Avenue west to Superior Street, east on Superior to 4th Avenue west and back down 4th Avenue west to Michigan Street.  During this detour, 6th Avenue west between Michigan Street and Superior Street will be converted to two-way traffic and the 6th Avenue west and Superior Street intersection will become a 4-way stop.
  • Intersection Closure - 5th Avenue west and West Michigan Street.  A week-long closure will allow crews to install concrete pavement at this intersection.  A detour will be in effect at that time that diverts motorists on I-35 headed north into downtown to an earlier exit.  Traffic headed south of downtown can take Superior Street west or Mesaba Avenue to access southbound I-35.
