The Minnesota Vikings shared some sad news yesterday that Jerry Burns passed away at the age of 94.

Burns spent 24 seasons as a Vikings coach, 18 seasons (1968-85) as the offensive coordinator, and 6 seasons (1986-91) as the head coach of the team. Burns led the team into the playoffs 3 times and is a member of the Minnesota Vikings Ring of Honor.

Burns actually started his NFL coaching career in Green Bay helping them win the first two Super Bowls as a defensive backs coach before joining another Vikings legend, Bud Grant as his offensive coordinator in 1968.

Grant, 93, issued a statement saying, "He was a very astute football mind. He could see things on the field immediately. He was as important to my career as anyone I've been involved with."

Current Vikings Head Coach Mike Zimmer also commented on the death of Burns by saying, "From the day I started with the Vikings, Jerry Burns was a great friend and someone I loved spending time with. He had a unique outlook on the game, and I learned something every time we talked. The football world lost a great one today."

Burns played college football at the University of Michigan where we was the quarterback from 1947 to 1950. We went on to coach college football at Iowa where he became the head coach in 1961, he had a record of 16-27-2 over five years. As head coach of the Vikings, Burns had a record of 55-46 and that includes going 3-3 in the playoffs.
