Game show hosting legend Alex Trebek has been diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer. Trebek shared news of this diagnosis Wednesday (March 6) via a video on the official Jeopardy! YouTube channel (seen above).

He shared in the video that "normally, the prognosis for this is not very encouraging, but I’m going to fight this, and I’m going to keep working". He went on to say that, with the support and love of his family and friends, he hopes to beat the low survival rates of the devastating disease. He joked toward the end of the video that he's contractually obligated to do so, in true Trebek fashion.

Trebek has considered retirement in recent years, but TMZ explains that he signed a three-year contract extension that would keep him as the show's host through the 2021-2022 season. Even with the cancer diagnosis, he says he plans to at least finish out this season.

The 78 year old Canada native has been the host of Jeopardy! since 1984.

Here's hoping his fight with pancreatic cancer ends with him beating the disease and living for many years to come.
