DOGE, Department of Government Efficiency, has dominated the news over the last couple of months.

Elon Musk is the face of the initiative created by the Trump administration to modernize federal technology and maximize government efficiency to reduce federal spending.

Whose Idea Was The DOGE Check?

James Fishback, CEO of investment firm Azoria, first suggested the idea in a post on X and later told CNBC, “Americans sent their hard-earned tax dollars to Washington, D.C., and some of those tax dollars were wasted.”

Fishback believes Americans need to be paid back for those wasted funds.

According to Newsweek, President Trump mentioned the idea in February. He said, "We give 20 percent of the DOGE savings to American citizens, and 20 percent goes to paying down debt."

When Will DOGE Checks Be Approved and Sent Out?

It might be a while. According to The Hill, "receiving a $5,000 check would rely on DOGE cutting enough to reach its $2 trillion goal.

Then all payments would have to be approved by Congress, which might be difficult. Some in Congress have an issue with who would receive the checks.

Checks won't be sent to individuals. Instead, each household would receive one $5,000 check.

The proposal says only those who pay in when they file their taxes would qualify. NBC News reports, "The rebate would be sent only to households that are net-income taxpayers with lower-income Americans not qualifying for the return."
