In line with the wind chill warning the Duluth office of the National Weather Service issued yesterday, it was downright frigid overnight Thursday into Friday morning.

With air temperatures sinking into double-digit below-zero temperatures combined with some wind to make for dangerous wind chill values, a number of area schools opted to either start late, close, or shift to a virtual learning day for Friday.

While not the coldest temperatures on record for the Northland, Thursday night into Friday morning marks what has been the coldest it has been in an otherwise relatively warm winter so far.

Here's the lowest wind chill from around the Northland, as reported by the National Weather Service:

Now, the good news is that after this week's colder temperatures went out on a particularly aggressive note, a warmup is in the forecast. Temperatures will rebound this weekend into the 20s (above zero!), and next week looks to stay warmer as well. Temperatures next week could see days above 30 degrees, as a matter of fact!

The warming trend looks to continue well into the month of February, with NOAA's Climate Prediction Center suggesting warmer than normal temperatures could hold on through much of the month. You can read more about that here.
