Highway 53 Road Work Near International Falls Resumes For The Summer

The multi-year road construction project on Highway 53 in International Falls will resume for the summer.  The Minnesota Department of Transportation is alerting drivers to the start-up of the work zone as of Monday, May 16.

Road crews with the Minnesota Department of Transportation have already made great progress on the $17.3 million project.  The past two summers have seen significant updates and work done, with improved road surface, better pedestrian accessibility, and overall safety improvements the main target for the work.

When workers resume the project on May 16, they'll spend the next few months with landscaping and tree planting, and finally the bench and kiosk installation.  Work is expected to wrap up by July 1, just in time for the holiday break. Baring any unanticipated delays, that will mark the completion of the entire project.

MNDOT crews are advising the public to slow down and be observant within the work zone.  That location is on Highway 53 from Crescent Drive to 4th Street and on Highway 11 from the east junction of Highway 71 to the east junction of Highway 53 in International Falls.

Primary impacts for drivers during this final leg of the work will be daytime lane closures with an eleven-foot width, and single lane traffic using the center turn lane as a bypass.

Many will be relived once the work is wrapped up as it's affected a busy stretch of roadway in International Falls.  The original design work was performed back in 2017, with the construction rolling out over the past two years.
