Highway 53 Construction To Close Rest Area – Starting June 10
A summer-long project to resurface a busy stretch of Highway 53 and make repairs to bridge decking begins on Monday, June 10. At the same time a popular rest stop will need to close for the duration of the project. The work will occur just south of Eveleth.
Work crews with the Minnesota Department of Transportation will spend the summer rebuilding that particular stretch of Highway 53 in both directions. Estimated cost for the work is $4.7 million. Drivers can anticipate a smoother road surface as well as improved accessibility to the Anchor Lake Rest Area.
Speaking of the Anchor Lake Rest Area - in order to facilitate the work and improvements, it will be necessary for it to close to public use. That closure will also begin on June 10. In addition to the general road improvements, MNDOT will also perform upgrades to the rest stop.
According to MNDOT's timeline, drivers can expect that the rest stop will reopen in late September. However, the full project will not be complete until late October.
